Sandy Hook Calendar:Corrections, Connections & Cognitions
In this article titled Sandy Hook Calendar:Corrections, Connections & Cognitions we will examine a few more of the many instances of early reporting on the Sandy Hook Event.
I’ve collected a great deal of information pertaining to the events in Sandy Hook. Unfortunately I haven’t examined all of it. You find it, you save it to look over later then you promptly forget. The information gets lost under a pile of other information. It’s a researcher’s version of hoarding. Fortunately we don’t have to worry about finding the skeletal remains of a variety of house pets under our collections.
This week I began going through some of these old files and articles to see if there might be something in there worth remembering. What I found came as a surprise…even to me.
Much of the original info for this article was shared in a thread on the discussion forum GLP. Unfortunately the creator of the thread was anonymous so I can’t give her/him the credit they deserve. As you can see there were others involved in the discussion that added their own research to the effort. They and the OP deserve much of the credit for this work.
By now it has been fairly well established that there are some rather perplexing examples of articles, news reports and photo submissions of the Sandy Hook Event that appear to precede December 14, 2012. Some examples of these anomalies are documented in our articles here…
Those that have been following along will no doubt be aware of many more. Not every example of dates preceding the event are as compelling as others. Some are rather weak, while others are much harder to explain away. For example…
I’ll leave you to decide where in the spectrum these should fall.
Sandy Hook Calendar:Corrections, Connections & Cognitions
Our first example comes to us from the Juvenile Justice Information Exchange
As you can see in the image above and at this link the date on the article is Dec.16/2012. Nothing strange about that…except…that’s not the way it used to look. I saved an HTML copy of the page. This is how it used to look.
If you do a search for Sandy Hook on their site you’ll actually bring up multiple versions of the exact same article with different dates. Oddly, one of them is dated Dec.11/2012.
A trip back to their archives for December 2012 will show the article with a date of Dec.11/2012 sandwiched in between articles with normal dates preceding and following Dec.11/2012.
An examination of the Directors of JJIE shows that the Publisher is a fellow named Leonard Witt. A quick background search turned up little beyond a history of spearheading gun control initiatives.
The Minnesota Public Radio Civic Journalism Initiative was started in August, 1995 after the successful “Minnesota Action Plan to End Gun Violence” project initiated by Leonard Witt when he was editor of Minnesota Monthly magazine.
An examination into the article’s author, Daryl Khan, turned up little of interest beyond his obvious dislike for NYC’s “Stop & Frisk” policy.
Our next example comes to us from the Putnam County Courier. The link is still active so you can go look for yourself.
As you can see from the article’s headline, Putnam is a mere 19 miles from Newtown. An examination of the ownership of the Courier yielded more interesting results.
Owner and publisher
Elizabeth Ailes of Garrison is publisher of the Putnam County News & Recorder and the Putnam County Courier. Mrs. Ailes comes to the papers after a successful career in broadcasting. She is a 20-year veteran of NBC News, CNBC, and America’s Talking, the forerunner of MSNBC.
She is married to Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO of the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network.
You may also notice at the bottom of the article it states that it was edited by Douglas Cunningham. A quick look at Cunningham’s LinkedIn page shows he was once Communications Director for the political campaign of Nan Hayworth.
Friends of Nan Hayworth
May 2010 – November 2010 (7 months)
Led the communications effort for winning Congressional candidate Nan Hayworth, NY-19 (elected Nov. 2, 2010). Successful political placement and press liaison with the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, the NY Times, Fox News, CNN, the AP and others. Executed a two-pronged strategy of local/ national buildup.
Talk about your ‘small worlds”. Nan’s birthday just happens to be Dec.14th
Getting back to Mrs. Ailes and her history at NBC…those of you familiar with our writings will likely know about NBC’s other coincidental connections to this event. If you’re not familiar you can read up on it here…
Next we have the Center for American Progress. The original link is still active here.
As with the article for the JJIE, a search of Sandy Hook on the CfAP site will bring up this article, in sequence, sandwiched between other articles with normal dates.
Warner is the author of a range of nonfiction books, among them the bestselling biography Hillary Clinton: The Inside Story. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband, Bloomberg editor Max Berley, and their children.
Hillary Clinton: Saint or Sinner? Biography Tells “the Inside Story”
“Very few people are aware of this,” Warner told us, “but Hillary carries around with her a book of scripture.” Her religious beliefs serve as her personal “support system,” Warner said,
While many people consider her more liberal than Bill Clinton, “Hillary was never any kind of radical,” Warner said. “She’s not left of center, but more of a mainstream liberal.” Hillary Clinton has always seen herself as an advocate, not a politician, Warner said, and most likely does not have political aspirations of her own.
Looking over the list of people associated with the CfAP brings up a veritable who’s-who of movers and shakers, including…
Arkadi worked as special advisor and first deputy criminal justice coordinator to New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, where he managed Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a national coalition that Mayor Bloomberg co-chairs.
Lawrence H. Summers
In 2009 President Barack Obama called on Summers to serve as the director of the National Economic Council. In this role, Summers led the president’s economic team as they guided the country out of the Great Recession.
Browner most recently served as assistant to President Barack Obama and director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy.
The list also includes, on the Board of Directors, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Glenn Hutchins. Aside from being filthy rich, Hutchins also served President Clinton in both the transition and the White House as a special advisor on economic and health-care policy. He is also on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY.
Sandy Hook Calendar:Corrections, Connections & Cognitions
The above image comes to us from the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives. The link is still active so you can check for yourself.
As we can see it is a press release written by Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson, Chair of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence. The only version of this press release that I could find directly connected to the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence is dated Dec.19/2012. You can view it here.
Mayors Against Illegal Guns today released a new ad featuring law enforcement leaders from across the country calling on Congress to pass background checks for all gun sales to save lives and help police catch criminals.
Chief Johnson has also been recognized by the Whitehouse for his efforts on gun control.
James Johnson, Chief of Police, Baltimore County; Chair, National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence Baltimore, MD
In 2013 Chief Johnson testified before Congress in support of expanding background checks to all purchasers, and was instrumental in changing Maryland’s law prohibiting assault weapons and limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines
Look who else was honored at the same ceremony…
Mark Barden, Director of Advocacy, Sandy Hook Promise, Newtown, CT
His journey has taken him from a Tea Party congressman’s Florida town hall to introducing President Obama in the Rose Garden to meetings with Members of Congress, governors and state legislators, media interviews and speaking to civic groups, faith groups and colleges.
Gun Violence:Champions of Change
If we go to the Partnership page of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence (NLP) we see that one of their partners is the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE). When we scan through their Board of Directors we find this woman…
Chief Barbara O’Connor, 1st Vice President
University of Connecticut
126 North Eageville Road
Storrs, CT 06269
Barbara O’Connor, 50, will leave the University of Illinois next spring to start at UConn on a date that has yet to be determined. She will become the first female police chief at UConn, which has 76 sworn officers and the same statutory authority as Connecticut municipal police departments.
As police chief of UConn O’Connor is also a member of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) which is also a partner of NLP.
One more little thing about Chief Barbara O’Connor. She just happens to be a member of Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy’s Sandy Hook Advisory Commission
Finally we come to, in my opinion, one of the most bizarre examples of an instance of pre-dating I have come across. This one comes to us from the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (MPS)
Click on the banner to download the document.
I saved the HTML version of the page and copied it to MSWord so I could more easily share it here. The original link for this document now comes up as a blank page.
I acknowledge that they have gotten the day on which the 12th of Dec fell, wrong (it was a Wed not a Tues) but I am at a loss to explain the mention of an situation report pre-dating the actual incident. I have sent an email to the MPS President and Secretary with this memo attached offering them an opportunity to provide an explanation. While we wait for a response let’s take a look at the Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disasters (CPDD).
A Google search of the term “APA Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disasters (CPDD)” takes us to a results page with very few pertinent links. The very first of these links is this one. It lists some of their activities…in 2010. For all intents and purposes it appears to be a rather anemic website.
I clicked on the contact page and found this…
American Psychiatric Association
1000 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 1825
Arlington, VA 22209
I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia. As a symbol of the U.S. military, “the Pentagon” is often used metonymically to refer to the U.S. Department of Defense.
As an aside…but also curious…if you go to the homepage of the American Psychiatric Society, navigate to their Disaster Psychiatry page and scroll down…you’ll notice the heading: APA Disaster Psychiatry Resources. Under that heading there is a link to the Committee of Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster. Except…there’s no link, it’s dead.
The next link in the Google search results was for a .pdf of the Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disasters annual report for 2010. It appears to be where all the info on the website has come from. You can click on the following banner to view/download.
From the report:
The early part of 2010 saw the fruition of many years of steady APA advocacy through the passage of a major historic piece of legislation. On March 23, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) into law as Public Law 111-148.
Included in the law is a provision for coverage for mental illness and substance use disorder treatment, on par with all other types of treatment.
Btw, that picture up there, the one of the tree, did it look familiar, at all? Yeah, it did to me, too.
I’ll be honest with you. There are a lot of names on that .pdf and the memo to look into for “connections”. The names on the memo, in many cases, have no identifying info beyond the name itself so its going to take some time. I’ll provide you with info on the ones I’ve had time to examine. If I happen to attribute the wrong credentials to the right name and you notice, let me know and I’ll be sure to make any corrections. Likewise, if you find anything you think might be relevant, let me know.
The first name on the list is Dr. Ursano. Let’s begin there. Its quite an extensive bio. Here are some of the highlights.
Robert J. Ursano, M.D
Department of Psychiatry
F.Edward Hebert School of Medicine
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland. He is founding Director of the internationally recognized Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress which has more than $20 million dollars in research funding.
Dr. Ursano was the first Chairman of the American Psychiatric Association’s Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster. Dr. Ursano was an invited participant to the White House Mental Health Conference in 1999…and a frequent advisor on issues surrounding psychological response to trauma to the highest levels of the US Government and specifically to the Department of Defense leadership.
Dr. Ursano has served as a member of…the National Institute of Mental Health Task Force on Mental Health Surveillance After Terrorist Attack.
He was a national consultant for planning clinical care responses and research programs following the September 11th terrorist attacks, providing consultation to New York State Governor’s Office, New York City Mayor’s Office, Department of HHS, National Capital response teams and the Department of Defense Pentagon response groups.
Dr. John Santopietro
John Santopietro, MD, FAPA, is chief clinical officer of behavioral health at Carolinas HealthCare System, headquartered in Charlotte, NC. He has held leadership positions in community mental health, public and private hospital systems, and has worked in Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Dr. Santopietro graduated cum laude with a degree in psychology and philosophy from Yale University.
Dr. John Santopietro could have gone almost anywhere in the U.S. to lead a behavioral health team, according to Jack Scully, the president of the American Psychiatric Association. Santopietro’s record of leadership was that strong.
It was Santopietro who Scully tapped after the tragic December school shootings in Newtown, Conn. Santopietro was chief medical officer at Community Health Resources in Windsor, Conn. at the time. Under his leadership, a team of professionals counseled more than 300 people affected by the tragedy in the area.
When Carolinas HealthCare System called about its position of clinical officer for behavioral health services…
…Dr. Santopietro got the hell outta Connecticut.
“When you boil it down, I decided to pick up my family and move halfway down the coast to the Carolinas for one reason,” Santopietro says. “I came because there is a cultural moment here like no other in the country right now. There is something important happening here. …. There is a moment of great opportunity.”
He left Connecticut because there was something important happening somewhere else?
One thing he was doing after he left Connecticut was attending the Corporate Partners/Affiliate Member Meeting for the National Council for Behavioural Health. 48 people were invited to this event, Dr. Santopietro being one. A full 1/3 of the rest were representatives of various factions of the pharmaceutical industry. Pretty good odds if you’re trying to market the latest and greatest psycho-pharmaceutical.
I haven’t had time to go through the entire itinerary for June and September or the list of attendees…but should you wish to look it over you can find it here Corporate Partners and Affiliate Members. Or the list of attendees here
Shaukat Khan, M.D.
U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs
I haven’t found much on Dr, Khan but I include him at this point for 2 reasons. The first reason is that he shares the same last name as Daryl Khan from the JJIE article mentioned earlier. I’ll get to the other reason in a moment.
As with Dr. Khan I haven’t found much on Dr. Stoddard. But I did find this.
The Connecticut Psychiatric Society (CPS) reacted swiftly to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, December 14. Society President John Santopietro, M.D., and Disaster Committee Chair Shaukat Khan, M.D., consulted that afternoon with APA experts including members of APA’s Committee on the Psychiatric Dimensions of Disasters.
By coincidence, the CPS had conducted a disaster-response training session for members just a month earlier. That course was led by Frederick Stoddard, M.D., a clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital
Oh, Baby. There’s nothing I like better than a good old fashioned coincidence. Perhaps you’re familiar with this one
Newtown’s Deputy Emergency Management Director Maureen Will speaking about the response of the Newtown Emergency Communications Center:
The center has staff of 10 people, including Will, who said they had received active-shooter training only the month before the tragedy and put it to work by keeping their composure during the ordeal.
Or this one from Ct State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky’s condensed Sandy Hook Report. He is speaking of Kaitlin Roig’s classroom.
Classroom 12 was located on the north side of the north hallway and was the first classroom east of the front lobby. The classroom door was located 23 feet east of the lobby. The window to the door was covered on the hallway side with dark colored paper that was there from a previous lockdown drill.
How long ago was the lockdown drill that the paper would still be over the window?
Getting back to the topic at hand, there will be additions to this list as I have time to more thoroughly research the various names. For now I’ll leave you with just 2 more.
You can’t exactly say he wrote the book on how to work with the media to get results, but you can say he wrote a chapter on it. Scroll down to Pg. 65.
Crafting the Message
When you plan a message, you want it to be like Goldilocks’ porridge, not too long and not too short, but just right. In an age of email, texting and twitter attention spans grow shorter by the day
We Are Newtown
We Choose Love
Those are my additions, not his.
The rest of the chapter is quite an entertaining read on how to massage and manipulate the press for your personal/institutional goals…from a psychologist’s perspective.

They gave Django Unchained 5 stars. Give me a break. The only redeemable part of that display of blood porn was Chistoph Waltz.
To this point I have yet to hear back from anyone at the MPS regarding the anomalous date on the above memo. When/if I do I will provide an update. Barring that I will continue to add information to this article as it becomes available.
Let us hear from you. What are your thoughts on Sandy Hook Calendar:Corrections, Connections & Cognitions? Shockingly anomalous evidence or easily explainable nonsense?
